TV-Free

I didn't even dream it would be so good. But I would never let my children come close to the thing.  Vladimir Zworykin, aged 92 on his invention, the television.

Around the time she turned 2, many of my friends would talk about how horrible it was to take their 2 year olds grocery shopping - they would throw tantrums because they wanted certain cereals and toys and candy bars.  I couldn't relate to any of that.  Genevieve didn't see TV so she had no idea what cereal boxes she should want or what toys she should want or what candy bars she should want.  She just rode in the cart and helped me put things in.  Nothing there looked familiar to her, with the exception of the things we regularly bought.

In addition, because she didn't see TV, she had no idea what McDonald's was or any other fast food restaurant. I was never one to go to fast food restaurants before she was born so after she was born, I never had any reason to go there.  But, I know many people who's kids know what McDonald's is through TV commercials and they have to drive certain routes to avoid passing a McDonald's or their child will begin screaming to go there.

Because she didn't see TV, she had no idea that kids ate cereal for breakfast and not broccoli, which made it easy for me to continue feeding her vegetables for breakfast (it was easier to have her eat her veggies at breakfast since that's when she was hungriest and less likely to put up a fight). She didn't see commercials for TV shows to get any idea that kids were supposed to be watching lots of TV.  She didn't see commercials for toys, candy, gum, medications and she had no idea that going to McDonald's would make her deliriously happy (I'm not sure why that is, but the kids in the commercials seem incredibly happy being there.  They must not yet be aware of the obesity epidemic).
